2017 Roadtrip part 3 (Yellowstone Day 1)

On Tuesday morning we headed for Yellowstone! It was about a 7 hour drive so we left pretty early in the morning.

We stopped at Elmer's Fountain in Idaho. You have to watch the exit carefully or you will miss this neat spot.

Montana is beautiful, and you can drive pretty fast there which was as adjustment!

We stopped for lunch in Butte, MT.

Around 4pm, we finally made it to Yellowstone. Just outside the entrance is Devil's Slide.

There are entrances on all four sides of the park. We saw 3 of the 4 and the North entrance is BY FAR the nicest. This is the Roosevelt Arch at the entrance. It was built in 1903.

Our first stop at Yellowstone was Mammoth Hot Springs. This was a really neat spot with a ton of different boardwalks you can take to view different hot springs.

We had to run back to the car from the hot springs as hail started to rain down.  I overheard other visitors say it was the second time that day it had rained/hailed.

We headed on our drive and found several neat spots to stop and take pictures.

We drove to the Petrified Tree and saw 2 bison just chillin.

Just a buffalo and me :)

We kept on driving and saw more buffalo and a deer.

Neat views from around the park.

After completing the northern loop, we headed to the west entrance to our hotel in West Yellowstone, it was about 8:30 local time. The time changed for us during our drive that day, so to us it felt like 7:30. We were planning to eat dinner once we got out of the park, about 25 miles from where we were when..... traffic STOPPED. We weren't sure if it was simply traffic leaving the park at the same time or not, but we were stopped. I was able to catch this glimpse of the sunset, not too shabby.

This is us in the car, at 11:30pm. It took us 3 hours to get out of the park, to go 25 miles. Apparently, there were bison crossing, which we never saw. A kind tourist who decided not to wait, put a sign on her car for all of us stuck in the line. We didn't have a choice but wait it out as it would have taken at least that long to go back to the northern exit and drive outside the park. It was a LOOONG three hours. Chips and granola bars for dinner, but the kids did AMAZING!!! We ended up getting to our hotel just before midnight.
